Tips Tricks & General Knowledge About Digital Signage
Turn It On/Off...
We’re talking about displays here. All displays have a rated lifespan. They are designed and built to perform X number of hours per day for X years. Commercial models usually have features and performance specifications ideal for Digital Signage use. Using Consumer models for Commercial purposes is never a good idea for a lot of reasons which we will get into in the next issue.
Regardless of the display you’re using, one way to extend the life of your investment is to limit the hours of operation. I often see closed businesses with all the lights turned out and their Digital Signage is still on, blasting away in the dark.
All the good Content Management software can schedule RS232 commands to turn on and off screens connected to the player’s serial port. The problem is getting the player connected to the screens. It’s not always possible, but there is a much overlooked alternative. Most recently produced displays have the ability to turn themselves on and off according to an onboard schedule.
TIP: Grab Your Remote and Manual!
Set your displays to turn off and on each day. If you save only eight hours of operation per day, you will extend the life of your display at least a year over its rated lifespan.
